FALL 2020 Registration NOW OPEN!
Thank you so much for your patience as we navigate these uncharted waters of Covid-19!
We wrapped up our Spring Semester of Music Together Online in June, and overall, we feel it was a success! Children were able to enjoy singing, dancing and musical play with their families at home, in much the same way as they do in our classes. We had a few challenges, and there are some things we are planning to do differently for online delivery this fall, but we were so happy to be able to provide the program that families have come to love and trust, and bring some familiarity to these strange times. A special thank you to the families who chose to give it a try, despite not knowing quite what it would look like! Your trust and support has meant so much to me in sustaining my small business and allowing me to continue doing this work that I love!
Without further adieu...we know you've been waiting for information about our Fall classes. Here is what we can tell you. We ARE offering classes this Fall! We have been watching closely as things have been unfolding over the summer with regard to the pandemic. There are many factors that we took into consideration, from the availability of rental space and the cost, to the curiosity of toddlers and how that is likely to work in a small, physically-distanced classroom. What we have decided to do is offer families a choice between in-person & online, depending on your comfort level, with classes beginning September 22. Please read on for more details (so many details)!
Our online offering this fall for Mixed Ages will include one Facebook Live class and one interactive Zoom class per week, each 20-25 minutes long. We are also offering the Babies Only curriculum, exclusively for children 8 months and under, which will consist of a once-weekly 45-minute Zoom class.
To further enrich your family's experience, we will upload additional video content to the private FB group each week, which may include single song activities, singalong storybooks, musical crafts, lullabies. Parent Education "shorts" will help you to understand how the class activities are helping your children to build a strong musical foundation, and how you can reinforce the learning during your day.
FB Live classes will be recorded and will remain within our private Bongos group, and families can choose to join the live class, and/or can view it at a later time, even watch it multiple times! Repetition is great for children and truly helps them to learn music fundamentals, and as they become more familiar with the music, and with your direct participation, you will likely find they engage better in the class...yes, even online.
Zoom (Mixed Ages) 9:30 am
Facebook Live (Mixed Ages) 9:30 am
Zoom (Babies Only) 11:00 am
Wait...More Screen Time?
We know screen time isn't generally recommended for this age group, but here's the difference: YOU! When children stare at a screen and passively receive information, they don't absorb it in the same way nor do they learn in the same way as when they have the active participation of a parent or close caregiver. SO, just like in our in-person classes, YOU are still the most important part. Your teacher will be on the screen, children might see their classmates on the screen (depending on which platforms we're using), but it is truly the interaction of the parent/caregiver with the child that is going to continue their music development and help them to engage with the activities! In fact, you might even choose to keep the screen visible only to you as you and your child play with the music (this is what we'll suggest for a Babies Only class). We will also give you lots of fun activities and ideas to do at home while we're all looking for WHAT to do!
"Tentative" In-person Classes (provided AHS guidelines allow by our start date):
We have scheduled in-person classes and are hoping to run them, but clearly that will ultimately depend upon AHS Guidelines for in-person classes involving singing. Classes will not run in exactly the same way that they always have. Here are some of the things that we are doing to help keep families safe. All classes will be held at Connectivity Dance, where they have been working all summer at preparing their space and their schedule according to Alberta Health guidelines. I'm so thankful that they are doing all they can to assist with our re-launch!
Our classes will be held in their largest studio, allowing extra space for physical distancing. Each person entering the studio will be screened for symptoms/temperature, and will be asked to wash/sanitize hands before and after class. Masks or shields will likely be required for adults. Classes will allow a maximum of six children, and for this semester, we ask that the adult to child ratio is 1:1, so that there is an adult that can be immediately responsive to each child at all times. I know this may be inconvenient for families with multiple children, but my hope is that another adult from your family or a cohort family can attend to assist. Mats will be set up differently than you are used to, providing a clear visual for the children with regard to distancing. Each family will receive a cleaned & sanitized collection of instruments/props for use that day, which I will gather for cleaning after class, so there will be no sharing of instruments. I will do my best to make sure everyone gets an opportunity to use the favourites (lollipop drums and clatterpillars) a few times during the semester! If someone in the family is showing symptoms and needs to miss a class, you are welcome to join an online class instead. There may still be some changes, but these are the major points I wanted to touch on for now. Families are welcome to register for in-person classes, but I am not requesting payment for these until we know for sure whether we'll be able to run them. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
- Wednesday (Mixed Ages) 9:45 am
- Wednesday (Babies Only) 11:00 am
- Saturday (Mixed Ages) 10:00 & 11:15 am
Note: if there is interest in additional in-person classes, please contact me...I may be able to add other options. Let me know what you're interested in!
Please let me encourage you to think of this offering as a way to connect with your child, your teacher and with others. We need each other during this time. We need music. We need something on the schedule! We can still be silly, interactive and playful “together” online, or physically distanced, while your child internalizes basic music fundamentals through the award-winning Music Together program! We hope to see you and your little one(s) in a class this fall, whether in person or virtually!
With the Bongos Collection, you and your child will groove to the African beat of "Funga Alafia," dance to a jazzy rendition of "Hey Diddle Diddle," go "Walking Through the Woods," and play some "Tricks with Sticks!" There are twenty-five songs to delight your family! In addition to weekly classes, your tuition includes recordings and materials for you to use at home and online access to the songs through the Hello Everybody app. Join us for this session and fill your family's fall with music, fun and friendship!
The new edition of the Bongos family songbook series is debuting this fall! Each song is brought to life through colorful and engaging illustrations by award-winning artist Jaime Kim and children's book illustrator Gerald Kelley. The new book will inspire your family to play with music all week long. You'll find it helpful to learn the lyrics, as a jumping-off point for creative storytelling, and to learn more about the songs you're singing in class. Your child may enjoy snuggling with you and singing through the whole book at once—or opening to a page to tell you what song they want to sing!
